Thane: Woman loses Rs 4 lakh in online shopping bid

THANE: A 44-year-old woman from Lousiwadi area lost nearly Rs 4 lakh to online scammers who approached and convinced her to download a suspicious mobile application after a failed online shopping transaction recently, the police informed Sunday.
According to the Wagle estate police that is investigating the case, the woman had purchased groceries and essentials on the portal of a popular portal but the transaction had apparently failed. Meanwhile, the woman received a phone call from three unknown numbers wherein the caller posed as representatives of the portal.
“The woman was told her recent transaction which had apparently failed could be activated after she completes few online formalities. The caller asked her to download an application which was sent to her mobile number following which the unsuspecting woman followed their instructions without ascertaining the authenticity of the same,” the police said.
The woman realised the conjob only after she received a message that Rs 4 lakh were debited from her account following which she approached the Wagle estate police and registered a complaint against the caller.
Meanwhile, experts have urged residents to be more careful of online scams and encouraged them to ascertain genuineness of the callers before downloading any application on their mobile phones.
