A 40-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with the hijacking of a diesel tanker in Sonkizizwe near Bronkhorstspruit on Wednesday.

The tanker was allegedly heading towards Bronkhorstspruit on the R42 when it was cornered and stopped.

Mpumalanga Police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said Ekurhuleni Metro police officers together with the SAPS from Springs assisted in chasing and cornering the truck.

"There was reportedly one occupant, who was the driver at the time. The man was then arrested and charged for possession of a stolen diesel tanker as well as possibly [being] linked to the incident in which the tanker was stolen at Bronkhorstspruit," Mohlala said.

The suspect appeared at the Delmas District Court on Friday.

Mohlala said the preliminary investigation so far has revealed the suspect could be connected to the theft of diesel and of tankers.

Provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga,  Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has expressed her appreciation for the good work done by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department in conjunction with the SAPS.
