Ranchi: As India celebrates National Cancer Survivors Month in June, oncologists from the state highlighted that cancer in the gall bladder is the most common type among patients from the region of Bihar and Jharkhand and most people became victims of the disease due to the lack of awareness, surveillance, regular follow-ups and check-ups as well as fear of social stigma among others.
Addressing a cancer survivor talk at the Shree Bhagwan Mahaveer Medica Superspeciality Hospital on Saturday, senior oncologist Dr Gunjesh Kumar said, “The most common type of cancer in our region is of the gall bladder as it is prone to people in regions living below the Gangetic plain. We also have a considerable number of cases for blood cancer in young patients while the older people are prone to lung cancer and multiple myeloma (a kind of blood cancer).”
Dr Kumar further informed the gathering, which was attended by more than 45 cancer survivors from Jharkhand, Bihar and neighbouring regions, that cancer, which is known to be untreatable, is curable with proper interventions at the right time and a cured person can lead a quality life.
The event was attended by several cancer survivors, who included young, middle aged as well as elderly persons, and they spoke about their experiences in fighting the disease. Among them are 22-year-old Sonat Maddaiya from Sahebganj, who is recuperating from blood cancer, and Kundan, a resident of Bariatu who had lost all hopes after returning from Mumbai, has shown tremendous recovery after being diagnosed with testicular cancer and a tumour in the stomach.
