Vadodara: Prominent leaders of opposition parties were detained or kept under surveillance by the police ahead of Prime Minister
Narendra Modi’s visit to the city on Saturday. Policemen were camping at the residences of most of the leaders since Friday and some prominent ones were even detained.
Leader of the Congress party in Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) Ami Ravat was taken to the Fatehgunj police station when she came out of her residential apartment complex on Saturday. She had been writing open letters to the PM since the last couple of days regarding issues concerning the city. Ravat claimed that she even had an invitation for the PM’s event, but was detained.
Congress city unit president Rutvij Joshi and several others were also detained ahead of the event. Joshi said that party workers were detained across the city and kept in custody till PM’s event got over. Joshi said that some party members were even detained from the office of the party.
Members of the Aam Aadmi Party were also kept under surveillance by the city police. The city unit of the party claimed that its functionaries had been kept under watch by the police at their residences.
Activist Shwejal Vyas who has been raising several issues and even put up social media posts ahead of the PM’s visit was also kept under watch by the police. He claimed that the police was camping at his residence since Friday.
