Bhubaneswar: The railways has cancelled 24 trains passing through Bhubaneswar and other major stations of Odisha between June 18 and 23 as a precautionary measure in view of the agitation against the Centre’s Agnipath scheme. It has also partially cancelled 13 trains and allowed eight to bypass Visakhapatnam.
Passengers faced problem as many popular trains have been cancelled because of protests. “I had booked a ticket on Visakha Express for Secunderabad one week ago where I was to join work in an infrastructure company. But the train has been cancelled. I do not know how the employer will react when I inform about the train cancellation,” said Sanatan Bisoyi from Ganjam.
Official sources said 18 of the 30 trains cancelled originate from different stations of ECoR. Similarly, nine in-coming trains to Odisha and three others passing the state have been cancelled due to protest. Besides the 24 trains, the railways has cancelled six more trains passing ECoR zone from Visakhapatnam to Kakinada and Guntur.
Ranjit Behera, a passenger from Cuttack, said he got stranded at Anand Vihar station in New Delhi after cancellation of the Nandankanan Express. “I was returning after visiting some tourist places. I have my elderly father and mother with me. Getting a confirmed ticket in other trains is not possible right now,” he added.
Manoj Ranjan Tripathy, a trader from the city, said due to cancellation of the Visakhapatnam-Bhubaneswar Intercity Express he could not reach Vizag on Saturday evening for a meeting. The state unit of All India Students Federation staged a demonstration near the assembly here on Saturday demanding withdrawal of Agnipath scheme.
