TIRUPUR: Security was beefed up at Tirupur railway station on Friday to prevent any untoward incident in the wake of protests and arson in several parts of the country over the Union government's Agnipath scheme to recruit youth to the Army for four years.
Some youngsters set a train on fire in protest against the Agnipath scheme in Chapra in Bihar on Thursday.
Among the guest worker population employed in the garment units in the Tirupur district, a majority of them hail from Bihar, Jharkhand and
West Bengal. As the Hindi-speaking states were witnessing aggressive agitations against this scheme, the city police deployed police personnel at the railway station.
Passengers coming to the station were checked by the security personnel before letting them in.
A riot control vehicle (Vajra) was on standby on the railway station premises to deal with any emergency situation.
