    India adds 12,847 new Covid cases, 14 fatalities; active cases up by over 4800

    • India reported a single-day rise of 12,847 coronavirus infections.
    • India also recorded 14 fresh fatalities.
    • The active cases now constitute 0.15 percent of the total infections, while the country's COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.64 percent, the health ministry said.
    • The case fatality rate was 1.21 percent.

    WTO agrees on all issues including fisheries subsidies

    • After two nights of intense negotiations, World Trade Organisation (WTO) members are on course to announce a package of measures, including a response to Covid and steps to check harmful fishing subsidies
    • After a gap of about nine years the WTO members reached a pact -- fisheries subsidies agreement.
    • For the first time subsides on overfishing, deep sea fishing and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing has been addressed through the proposed pact.
    • It was also agreed to find a final solution to the issue of continuation of moratorium on imposing customs duties on electronic transmission of goods by the next ministerial conference of the WTO

    Tight security, drone surveillance in UP today in view of Friday prayers and 'Agnipath' protests

    • Tight security arrangements have been made in major cities in Uttar Pradesh in view of Friday prayers and also the protests over 'Agnipath' scheme.
    • Drone surveillance will be carried out in sensitive areas.
    • While police across the state have been put on high alert for Friday prayers, the government has deployed additional state and central paramilitary forces as a precautionary measure to contain any sporadic outbursts.
    • Special focus is on security in Prayagraj, Kanpur, Lucknow, Moradabad and Saharanpur.
    • So far 357 persons have been arrested in nine districts for the violence after Friday prayers in some of the districts on June 10.

    • Former Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi has urged the Bihar government to make provision in the recruitment of Agniveers in police services.
    • After the announcement of Agnipath scheme by Rajnath Singh, a couple of days ago, BJP ruled states came up with the plan to give preferences to its beneficiaries in state police.
    • The Union Home Minister also promised to accommodate them in paramilitary forces but the other non-BJP ruled states have not given any such assurance so far.

    • Former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh has suggested reviewing the 'Agnipath' scheme for recruitment in defence forces saying "it will dilute the long-existing distinct ethos of regiments."
    • Captain Amarinder Singh, an ex-serviceman, said that "four-year service is too short for a soldier."
    • He wondered why the government of India needed to make such radical changes in the recruitment policy, which has been working so well for the country for so many years.
    • "Hiring soldiers for four years, with effective service of three years, is not at all militarily a good idea," he remarked.

    Govt raises upper age limit for recruitment to 23 years

    • As the violence spiralled, the government raised the upper age limit to 23 years from 21 years for recruitment under the scheme for the year 2022, without making a reference to the turmoil.
    • As violent protests against the new recruitment scheme Agnipath raged across several states, the government issued a clarification, asserting that the new model will not only bring in new capabilities to the armed forces.
    • Govt said it will also open up avenues for youth in the private sector and help them become entrepreneurs with the aid of the financial package they will get upon retirement.
