Children feel the heat as anganwadis lack power

Tirupur: While the summer heat is unbearable for many, it is like living inside the oven for around 400-450 tiny tots who are enrolled in the 12 anganwadi centres in the city limits as the centres have no power connection.
Parents blame the district administration for the sufferings of their children and said some centres have no power connection for years now.
A parent of a child from KVR Nagar said, “The anganwadi centre in our locality has no power connection for seven years now. The children feel stuffy and hot even during some days of winter and monsoon seasons.”
Another parent in Pooachakadu said a few parents have shifted their wards to private nursery centres or anganwadi centres outside the city limits where all the basic facilities are available. “But all could not do the same.” According to official sources, the delay in getting power connections is because the anganwadi centres fall under the city corporation limit.
An official said staff at the electricity department are seeking various information whenever they go there seeking a new connection. “However, we are coordinating with the city corporation and the electricity department to get power connections. The anganwadi centres were recently sanctioned funds under the Integrated Child Development Scheme to pay a caution deposit for a new connection with the electricity department,” the official said, adding that after getting power connections, the centres need to be supplied with ceiling fans and light bulbs.
