Coimbatore: Damaged road in Chinnatirupathi poses threat

Salem: The residents of Chinnatirupathi have urged the Salem Municipal Corporation (SMC) to relay the road in their area as its condition has deteriorated at several places.
K Gnanaraj, one of the residents, said the SMC had dug up the road two years ago to lay pipelines for underground drainage.
“After completing the work, corporation officials closed the pits with sand and laid a tar road. No effort was taken to pack the sand tightly. Now, the road has collapsed on several spots because of the subterranean adjustments of sand,” he said.
Another resident, E Kokilavani, said the road starting from Chinnatirupathi bus stop to Court Road was nearly 3km long. “It is an important route in the city. Hundreds of bikes and vehicles use the road every day,” she said.
Sumathi Velavan, of Shanthi Nagar near Court Road, pointed out that the road was used by many students, as the area houses a private arts and science college and a CBSE school.
“After seeing and hearing about a few cave-ins, we are scared to use the road. The authorities should check the road and relay it before any mishap takes place,” she said.
When contacted by TOI, SMC commissioner T Christuraj said he would ask officials to inspect the road and take necessary steps as early as possible.
