Gurgaon:
MCG has started its campaign to raise awareness on the ban of single-use plastic. The civic body has constituted teams to cover prominent markets in the city and so far they have visited markets in Khandsa, Naharpur Rupa and Sheetla Colony to apprise traders and shop owners about the ban on single-use plastic.
“We have started raising awareness against the use of single-use plastic. We have started with markets in the city and will gradually cover more commercial units in the city. This is being done following the directions of the Centre to impose a ban on use of single-use plastics from July 1. We will soon start imposing penalties so that people don’t violate the norms,” said SS Rohilla, MCG spokesperson.
According to the notification of the union ministry of environment, forest and climate change, “The manufacturer, businessman involved in import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single-use plastic, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene, commodities shall be issued fined from July 1".
“MCG should make flying squads for each zone. The MCG teams can have volunteers from the city to raise awareness for such campaigns. These flying squads can check on the use of single-use plastic in the markets and other commercial areas. This exercise is futile until MCG strats challaning those who violate the plastic waste management norms,” said Vaishali Rana Chandra, a city-based environmentalist.
