New panel in Pune for transplant nod

PUNE: The state Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has formed a new regional authorization committee for organ transplants for the Pune region. It will be headed by the dean or superintendent of BJ Medical College and Sassoon Hospital.
The earlier committee was headed by the superintendent of the Sassoon hospital. All the seven members have been replaced with new ones in the notification issued by the state. The new committee includes two members from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Pune, two professors or assistant professors from BJ Medical College, the deputy director of health services Pune circle or his nominee and the assistant director of health services or civil surgeon of Pune district.
The DMER has also formed two separate authorisation committees for Mumbai - one for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg jurisdictions, while another for Mumbai suburban, Thane and Palghar areas.
Dilip Mhaisekar, director of Medical Education and Research, told TOI, "With this development, the new live donor organ transplant applications could be assessed from their respective hospitals. After the regional committee of Sassoon hospital was dissolved, the new applications were verified by the state panel."
Dr VP Kale, dean, BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, told TOI, "The regional committee will be headed by the superintendent of Sassoon hospital. Currently, Dr Vijay Jadhav is in-charge superintendent, and the position will be filled soon. The other members' names will be communicated to the state within a week."
