MOTIHARI: Eight police personnel, including two sub-inspectors and two woman constables, were injured in an attack by the
villagers at
Janerawa under Areraj police station area in
East Champaran district on Wednesday. The police team led by the SHOs of Areraj and Gobindganj police stations had gone there to arrest four wanted accused in a case of attempt to murder.
Areraj SDPO Santosh Kumar told this news paper that a mob of supporters of the accused attacked the police team with lathis and hard objects and pelted them with bricks and stones. They also tried to vandalize the police jeep. All the injured police personnel were taken to Areraj hospital.
Areraj police station SHO Kanchan Bhashkar said he along with a police force comprising assistant sub-inspector Afroz Alam reached Janerawa and arrested Suresh Tiwari and Krishna Tiwari. But one of the accused, named Prince Tiwari, escaped and incited the villagers to attack the police force. A mob suddenly assembled and attacked the police team.
Bhashkar said the police later arrested the two more accused from the village and returned to Areraj. An FIR has been lodged against the those who attacked and injured the police personnel and raids were being conducted to nab them.
According to police sources, the incidents of attack on the police by villagers in support of the accused have become frequent in the district and nine such cases have been registered in different police stations in the district in the last one year. A police team was attacked by the villagers at Matiariya under Harsidhi police station area in which the then SP, Navin Chandra Jha, was also injured.
