Coimbatore city police to start 'foot patrolling' on Friday

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore city police commissioner V Balakrishnan on Thursday said a foot patrolling system would come into force on Friday evening to improve visible policing and relationship with the public.
Under the system, he said police officers in the rank of sub-inspectors to deputy commissioners of police would visit a street daily and interact with the general public, merchants, hawkers, autorickshaw drivers and others from 5pm to 7pm.
“The foot patrolling will commence in all the 15 police station limits in the city on Friday evening. This will help reduce the gap between police and the general public. The daily presence of cops on the streets will also help reduce crimes,” the city top cop said.
Pointing out that the four-wheeler patrolling system had not yielded any good results, Balakrishnan said he had asked the station house officers to identify vital points in their jurisdictions and station the patrol vehicles there for more than an hour daily for it to be more effective.
The city police commissioner inspected Bazaar (B1) police station on Thursday and found that traffic cops were not wearing body cameras while they were on duty. “I have advised them to wear the body cameras while on duty, as the video could be used as evidence if motorists pick up unwanted quarrel with them.”
