Mumbai: 2 ‘cops’ held for kidnap bid, extortion of Rs 10,000

MUMBAI: Police arrested two men who posed as crime branch officer for allegedly kidnapping a 22-year-old man with a multinational bank’s call centre in Goregaon and headed in their car along with him to Andheri, where he was threatened to pay Rs10,000 ransom after withdrawing it from an ATM on Monday.
Harish Gaikwad (27) and Chandrakant Gaikwad (32) from Malad (W) were caught after the Dindoshi police, where the case was registered, went through the CCTV footage of their after committing the offence.
The incident occurred around 5.30 pm, when the victim signed off from work and left the office. “The duo intercepted the victim, introducing themselves as Mumbai Crime Branch officers, and claimed that they had come to arrest him in a money laundering case. When the victim told them it was a false complaint, the duo assaulted him and forced him into a car, and demanded Rs 10,000. They drove to Andheri when the victim said that he did not have that much money. They forcibly made him withdraw Rs 2,000 from the ATM and released him after threatening to pay them Rs 10,000 later,” said a Dindoshi police officer.
