Maharashtra reports 4,255 new Covid-19 cases, active tally past 20,000 mark

As many as 4,255 more people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours across Maharashtra, said the state health department on Thursday. With this, the cumulative tally of the virus in the state has reached 79,23,697.
This is the highest daily rise in cases since 12 February, when the state had recorded 4,359 infections.
It also marks a rise of 231 coronavirus infections (5.74%) as compared to yesterday. On Wednesday, the state had recorded 4,024 cases and four fatalities.
Further, two new cases of the B.A.5 variant of coronavirus have also been also detected in the state. These cases come from Nagpur in a 29-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman.
The patients had tested positive for Covid on 6 and 9 June, respectively. They have a history of travelling to Kerala and Mumbai. Both are vaccinated and have recovered at home, said the health department.
With this, the tally of BA.4 and BA.5 patients in Maharashtra has reached 19.
Out of the total cases in Maharashtra, Mumbai recorded 2,366 infections, 73 more than yesterday. The tally of Covid-19 cases in the city has risen to 10,88,248.
For the last 10 days, the metropolis has been recording four-digit Covid-19 cases. However, the daily case count went beyond the 2,200 mark on Wednesday. This is the highest single-day Covid-19 count in Mumbai since 22 January.
Currently, Mumbai's positivity rate is 15.11%, while the number of beds occupied in the hospitals has crossed the 100-mark. Despite the recent surge in cases, Mumbai remains free of sealed buildings and containment zones.
In addition to this, 2,879 patients recovered from Covid-19 in the state since the previous evening, which took the tally of recovered patients to 77,55,183. The recovery rate in the state is 97.87%.
Following this, the active coronavirus caseload in the state stands at 20,634.
