The unemployment rate of those in the labor force declined to 4.2 per cent during July, 2020 to June, 2021, from 4.8 per cent in the same period of 2019-20. This information was obtained from the data released on Wednesday by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation.
According to the National Statistical Office (NSO)'s Periodic Labor Force Survey (PLFS), the unemployment rate was 5.8 per cent in the year 2018-19 and 6.1 per cent in 2017-18. The annual report (July, 2020 to June, 2021) of the PLFS states that the unemployment rate (UR) stood at 4.2 per cent in 2020-21. It was 4.8 per cent in 2019-20.
The percentage of unemployed persons in the total workforce is called the unemployment rate (UR). The data shows that the unemployment rate has decreased during the last four years 2020-21 (July to June). However, its pace has been slow. Similarly, the UR rate in men also came down to 4.5 per cent during the year 2020-21, from 5.1 per cent in 2019-20, six per cent in 2018-19 and 6.2 per cent in 2017-18.
A similar trend has also been observed in the UR rate for women. The UR rate for women has come down to 3.5 per cent during 2020-21. It was 4.2 percent in the year 2019-20, 5.2 per cent in 2018-19 and 5.7 per cent in 2017-18.
The worker population ratio (WPR) has also improved. It shows the percentage of people working in the population. According to the report, the WPR increased to 39.8 per cent in the year 2020-21, which was 38.2 per cent in 2019-20, 35.3 percent in 2018-19 and 34.7 per cent in 2017-18. A total of 12,562 units of Phase-I have been included in the Annual Report for the period July, 2020 to June, 2021 for rural and urban areas. This includes 6,930 villages and 5,632 urban blocks.
