BBMP consults legal cell over Idgah Maidan row in Karnataka

BBMP is reviewing the applications of right-wing outfits that sought permission to hold multiple events at Idgah Maidan in Chamarajpet and sent them to its legal cell.
BENGALURU: BBMP is reviewing the applications of right-wing outfits that sought permission to hold multiple events at Idgah Maidan in Chamarajpet and sent them to its legal cell.
Right-wing organisations had sought to hold International Yoga Day, Independence Day and Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav events at the venue, claiming the maidan was BBMP property.
BBMP west zone joint commissioner SM Srinivasa said as per available records, the ground is owned by the Palike and exclusively used as a playground. But, after row erupted over the 9221.7sqmt of land, the Karnataka state board of Auqaf submitted a Supreme Court order claiming ownership for the land. Since the court document has been submitted, the Palike has to study every aspect of the dispute before arriving at a decision.
Srinivasa said all necessary documents pertaining to the ground have been sent to the legal team for further study and until they give their opinion, no decision can be taken.
Deputy legal officer Muniraju M said the documents have reached the legal team and it will look into the details and advise accordingly.
