Now, movable speed radars on Noida roads to spot violators

At present, the traffic department has eight speed radars
NOIDA: Noida traffic police have started using movable speed radars to issue challans for speed violations. The devices placed at any location automatically read the registration number plates of speeding vehicles and issue challans.
Ganesh Prasad Saha, the deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Gautam Budh Nagar, said that several CCTV cameras are already installed at different parts of the city to issue automatic challans to speed limit violators.
“We started using speed radars to issue challans at places currently not covered by the CCTV cameras. The speed radars play an important role in instilling a traffic safety sense among people, while CCTV cameras mostly go unnoticed by commuters,” he said.
At present, the traffic department has eight speed radar cameras.
Bijendra Singh, a traffic sub-inspector, said he used the speed radar to issue 20 challans to people speeding in the city on Tuesday.
“There are different speed limits for traffic on different roads in Noida. For example, the speed limits are 60 km/hour for light vehicles and 40 km/hour for heavy vehicles on the Noida elevated road connecting sectors 18 and 60. On expressways, the speed limits for light and heavy vehicles are 100 km/hour and 80 km/hour, respectively, on normal days. The speed limits change as per weather conditions, especially during fog and winter. We fix speed limits in the radar, and the machine automatically issues challans to people after spotting violations,” he said. Up to Rs 2,000 can be fined for speeding violations in Noida.
Violators immediately get an SMS alert once a challan is issued. In May 2019, Noida traffic police installed a stationary radar-based camera near Dalit Prerna Sthal to improve traffic monitoring and generating penalties through e-challans.
Meanwhile, Noida Authority and traffic police are conducting trials of an integrated traffic management system (ITMS) to streamline traffic in the district. As per the plan, 84 traffic junctions will get sophisticated cameras with features like adaptive traffic control system, automatic number plate recognition, red light violation detection, speed violation detection, face detection camera, public address system, variable message display board, and e-challan system.
On Wednesday, Noida Authority CEO Ritu Maheshwari said officials have already conducted the ITMS trials 51 locations till now. “The ITMS trials have already been done at 51 locations and work is going on for the rest of the locations in Noida. Currently, the command and control room is fully operational, public address system is also installed on completed locations (sic),” she said in a tweet.
The officials said they would complete the ITMS project by the end of this month, in June.
