AHMEDABAD: The city on Wednesday recorded the death of a Covid patient - the first in three months - and 91 cases, recording its highest daily tally in over 100 days.
This is the third Covid death in the state in the past one month, taking the official death toll to 10,946.
Ahmedabad accounted for nearly half (49%) of the 184 cases in Gujarat on Wednesday. With the update, the active cases reached 555, contributing 56% of the state's 991 active cases.
Analysis of the active cases in the city indicated that more than 80% of them were reported from the western parts - the north-west zone had 158 cases, followed by 147 cases in the south-west zone, and 125 in west zone. In comparison, the east zone had 20 cases, south zone 17, north zone 13 and central zone 10. In terms of areas, Jodhpur topped with 67 active cases, followed by 58 in Bodakdev, 54 in Thaltej, 41 in Vejalpur and 38 in Navrangpura.
The state health department officials said that they have not recorded hospitalization of the patients so far in Ahmedabad as a majority have either mild or no symptoms.
"However, the constant rise in both daily and active cases is a matter of concern, and Ahmedabad and Vadodara city administrations have been asked to improve testing, tracing and identification of clusters with higher concentration," said a senior official, adding that majority of the new cases are fully vaccinated, and thus have almost no or mild symptoms. "Deaths have remained very low. But attempts are being made to identify vulnerable populations. A special booster dose drive for senior citizens was recently carried out."
The other cases included 18 in Vadodara city, 16 in Surat city, 10 in Rajkot city, seven in Gandhinagar city, and four each in Kutch, Surat and Valsad districts among others. With the update, the number of districts with zero active cases shrunk to nine.
In the past 24 hours, Gujarat vaccinated 2,610 individuals for the first dose and 18,114 for the second. In all, 5.4 crore have been administered the first and 5.29 crore the second dose of Covid vaccine. The state administered booster doses to 22,493 persons, taking the total to 36.68 lakh.
