PUNE: Only very light to light rains are likely in the city till June 19, an India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast said on Wednesday.
So far in June, Pune (Shivajinagar) has only received 28mm rainfall in the season up till June 15, with the monsoon being sluggish in parts of the state.
The said location received rain only thrice in the last fortnight - on June 10, 11 and 12. Rainfall amounts for June 10 and 12 were nearly minuscule - 0.3mm and 2.1mm, respectively - as per IMD data. On June 11, Shivajinagar received 25.6mm rainfall.
Although the IMD had already forecast very light to light rains for the city, rainfall amounts reported by most locations in the city have been trace to nil for the last few days.
An IMD official told TOI, "For the next few days, till at least June 19, the city can only expect very light to light rains as there is currently no favorable system to aid rainfall in Pune. Regions adjoining Pune may, however, report convective showers. But the situation in the city is likely to remain more or less as it is now for the next few days. Yet, very light to light showers could also occur."
The official also said that Pune is in the leeward side of the Western Ghats, and thus it generally contends with less rainfall, since most of the rain-bearing winds from the Arabian Sea tend to give much of the rain they carry over districts like Mumbai and Thane, which are on the windward side or western part of the Western Ghats.
However, as per private weather forecaster Skymet Weather Services, rain is on the lower side currently even in Mumbai. The private weather forecaster said in an update on Wednesday, "After the onset of the monsoon on June 11, and some moderate rains for three days, there has been a slight reduction in rain over Mumbai at the moment. For the last three days, rains have been minimal over Mumbai and so will be the case until June 17, till which time rains will be light and patchy in the coastal city."
On Wednesday, most stations where IMD regularly monitors rainfall received nil rainfall, while others got minimal rain. Mahabaleshwar saw 0.2mm rainfall from 8.30am till 5.30pm on Wednesday, Sangli 0.1mm, Mumbai (Colaba) 4mm, Gondia 13mm and Nagpur 5mm in the same period.
