Pillur III water project to be completed by March

Coimbatore: The Pillur III drinking water scheme will be completed by March next year, said municipal administration minister K N Nehru. The scheme aims to meet the drinking water needs of the projected population of the city in 2040. It was taken up in 2019 at a cost of 740.15 crore.
After inspecting the works carried out for the scheme, the minister told reporters on Wednesday that there were some difficulties in acquiring land required for carrying out headworks and assured that those issues will be solved.
“The other components of the project are taking shape as expected. The project can be completed in a matter of a few months once land acquisition work is completed,” the minister said.
The city is facing water shortage as the quantity of water received from Kerala had decreased. “While we are supposed to receive 98 MLD, only 39 MLD has been received so far,” he said.
Officials said a total of 156 acres of land is required to complete the project. Out of that, 35.5 acres belong to the government and the remaining land belong to private people.
The district administration has taken up the task of acquiring land in a phased manner. “Almost 35% of the Pillur III project has been completed. While 64% of the water treatment plant work is completed, 77% of tunnel and construction work is over. Out of the total length of the 90.76 km pipeline, work to the extent of 10.98km has been completed,” an official said.
