Army organises workshop with VDCs to reorient their arms skills in Rajouri village

District Rajouri (J&K) on Tuesday.
PRO defence Jammu Lt Col Devender Anand said, "During the workshop in which a total of 25 VDC
"The experts from the Indian Army assisted the members of VDC in further improving their self defence
capabilities and laid emphasis on the role of these committees."
Col Anand said, "A lecture cum demonstration on weapon handling and cleaning, musketry, firing
positions and minor repairs of weapons was conducted as part of the workshop." "The participating VDC members appreciated the support provided by the Indian Army in all spheres, Col
Anand added .
Pertinently Village Defence Committees (VDCs) are an important part of the anti-insurgency grid in
Jammu and Kashmir and were first set up in the mid-1990s to strengthen the security of those living in
remote and mountainous areas of Doda, Kishtwar, Ramba, Rajouri, Reasi, Kathua, and Poonch districts
to arm and train villagers to defend against Pakistan- sponsored terrorists.
"Each committee comprises ten armed personnel who have been allotted guns."
Officially the number of total village defence committees in two regions is 4125 with an objective to
ensure safety and security of the identified villages along the borders as well as in interior areas,
infrastructural installations in and around them.
