AHMEDABAD: About 28% of the cameras installed under the civic body and traffic police's joint project, Safe and Secure Ahmedabad (SASA), are nothing more than road furniture. These cameras do not see and capture anything as they are not connected to the monitoring centre.
Under the Rs 314 crore SASA project, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has installed 6,200 CCTVs on major roads, of which 855 cameras are yet to be connected to the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) that monitors and stores footage on its servers.
According to AMC officials, most of these defunct CCTVs are in areas such as SP Ring Road, Ashram Road, the road from Chandkheda to Sabarmati powerhouse and 132 Feet Ring Road.
In many cases, when a fatal road accident occurs and city police asks the ICCC for CCTV footage, the civic body is unable to provide it because of the defunct cameras.
