The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) concluded media rights auctions for its biggest prized property, the Indian Premier League (IPL), raising a record ₹48,390 crore ($6.2 billion) for the 2023-27 period, with digital exceeding television. The total is almost three times the ₹16,347.5 crore that the BCCI earned in the last rights cycle from DisneyStar.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah officially announced DisneyStar as the winner of linear TV rights for the Indian subcontinent, or package A, and Viacom18 as the winner of the Indian subcontinent digital rights--packages B and C -in a series of tweets on Tuesday. The auctions had begun on Sunday

Shah also named Viacom18 as winner of three international territories-Australia-New Zealand, UK-Europe and South Africa. The remaining two territories, the US and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), went to Times Internet, part of the Times Group, which also publishes this paper.

For the First Time Key Rights will be Split
ET first reported on June 14 that DisneyStar had retained the TV rights by bidding Rs 57.5 crore per match, or Rs 23,575 crore in total, while the digital pack was won by Viacom18 for Rs 50 crore per match or Rs 20,500 crore. On Tuesday, Viacom18 also picked up the digital non-exclusive pack, which consists of a total of 98 matches over five years-opening games, weekend evening ties and the playoffs-for Rs 33.24 crore per match or Rs 3,257.5 crore for the five years. Overall, Viacom18 will pay Rs 23,757.5 crore for exclusive digital rights. Together, the five territories in the rest of the world pack were sold for Rs 2.6 crore per match, or Rs 1,058 crore for five years.

While media predictions had estimated the rights value would cross Rs 60,000 crore, experts polled by ET had pegged it at just below Rs 50,000 crore before the auctions.

"India has seen a digital revolution and the sector has endless potential. The digital landscape has changed the way cricket is watched. It has been a big factor in the growth of the game and the Digital India vision," Shah tweeted.

He added that the BCCI will utilise the revenue raised to strengthen the domestic game starting from the grassroots, boost infrastructure and spruce up facilities across India as well as enrich the overall cricket-watching experience.

This is the first time that the key rights will be split. For the first 15 years, the rights were held solo-Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) for the first 10 years and DisneyStar for the last five.

"We are pleased to extend our association with the IPL and look forward to offering the next five seasons across our portfolio of television channels," said Rebecca Campbell, chairman of international content and operations at the Walt Disney Co. "IPL is an important component of our portfolio of television channels in India."
