Mumbai: Three college students feared drowned off Juhu beach

MUMBAI: Three college students were feared drowned while they ventured into the sea behind Juhu's JW Marriott Hotel on Tuesday. The drowning was witnessed by their friend, who was watching them play and repeatedly told them to return but was too late when they were pulled by waves. Juhu police said rescue operations were on.
Fire brigade officials said a search operation was on to rescue them on Tuesday evening. The drowning was reported by lifeguard Manohar Shetty. "The four friends from Chembur had come to Juhu beach for a trip. Three of them ventured into the sea despite they not knowing how to swim and ventured deep inside. At the time of incident it was low tide but they were pulled by the waves," said Santacruz police senior inspector Balasaheb Tambe.
BMC said the three feared drowned were Aman Singh (21), Kaustubh Ganesh Gupta (18) and Pratham Ganesh Gupta (16). "The incident took place at around 3:30 pm and was reported by the lifeguard around 4:45pm. It took place behind the JW Marriott Hotel at Juhu Tara Road in Santacruz (W). The search operation by the fire brigade team is in progress. Navy divers have also been mobilized," said an official.
The drowning was designated as a level 1 incident. This is the first drowning since the onset of the monsoon this year.
