Outgoing Kaizer Chiefs defender Daniel Cardoso has revealed that players arrived at training "under the influence of alcohol" during his time at the Soweto giants.
The former Free State Stars defender will see his contract with Amakhosi expire at the end of June alongside several other star players, including Lebogang Manyama, Bernard Parker, Leonardo Castro, Samir Nurkovic and more.
Cardoso did not hold back during his interview on Marawa Sports Worldwide, letting the South African public know that things were not all rosy at Naturena.
"I think we just let things slide too much," Cardoso said.
"Like you said, the 'old school Chiefs', a player comes there under the influence [of alcohol], they would kick his a**, and they would tell him to get back in his car and go back home.
"I think with us and this generation, we're a bit too soft. We let things slide, and it starts building up. When a player has an outburst, it becomes a problem."
Cardoso was then probed on what would happen when players arrived drunk to training, and he responded: "They were allowed to carry on, they would get a warning and a bit of a talking to and a week later, it's back to normal."
The 33-year-old also questioned the club's transfer policy and believes the talent brought in over the past seven years was not up to standard.
"I think the biggest downfall over the seven years that I've been there is you see players come in and go out six months to a year [later]," he explained.
"I think sometimes the quality of signings that do come to Chiefs; you're bringing NFD players, you're bringing in free agents. I mean, they're passionate to play, but some players just want to earn a salary.
"You can see it on the field; you can see who wants to play. Some players just arrive under the influence of alcohol because they don't care. That was the biggest effect that we had at Chiefs over the few years that I've been there."
The centre-back will officially be a free agent on the 1 July after making over 200 appearances for Chiefs in his seven-year spell at the club.
