Prophet comment row: Supreme Court to hear petition against UP demolitions on June 16 - Key points

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Thursday the pleas filed by Muslim body Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind seeking directions to the Uttar Pradesh government to ensure that no further demolitions of properties of alleged accused of recent violence are carried out in the State.
The Muslim body in its plea has said that no demolitions of properties be carried out without following due process and such exercise is done only after adequate notice.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal government on Wednesday submitted a report before the Calcutta high court, stating that there has been no untoward incident in the last two days during protests over now-sacked BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad.
Earlier in the day, BJP's Naveen Kumar Jindal failed to appear before the Maharashtra police to give his statement.

A vacation bench of Justices A S Bopanna and Vikram Nath is likely to take up the matter two days after some former judges and senior advocates wrote to Chief Justice of India N V Ramana urging him to take suo motu cognizance of alleged incidents of illegal detention, bulldozing of residences, and police action on protestors agitating against certain objectionable remarks made by BJP spokespersons.
The letter petition has been signed by former judges of the top court Justices B Sudarshan Reddy, V Gopala Gowda, and AK Ganguly, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court AP Shah, former judge of Madras High Court Justice K Chandru, and former judge of Karnataka High Court Mohammed Anwar.
218 held in connection with violence: WB govt
The Bengal government told the Calcutta high court that it had arrested 218 people in connection with the violence that broke out in the state on June 9.
In a report submitted to the court, advocate general SN Mookherjee said that 10 areas had been affected, including some in Howrah, Murshidabad and Krishnanagar.
Protesters had blocked national highways and railway tracks at different places in Howrah district for several hours on June 9 and 10 and damaged public and private properties.
Naveen Kumar Jindal fails to appear before police
Expelled BJP functionary Naveen Kumar Jindal failed to appear before the Bhiwandi police here in Maharashtra on Wednesday in a case over his alleged controversial tweets against Prophet Mohammad, an official said.
The Bhiwandi police had summoned him to record his statement in connection with the case registered against him.
The BJP had on June 5 suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled Delhi BJP media head Jindal after their alleged derogatory remarks against the Prophet led to an outrage in India and Gulf countries.
Sharma, who was summoned by the Bhiwandi police on Monday in connection with a case against her, had sought four-week time to appear before the police to record her statement, an official earlier said.
Cases registered against 200 people in Bhiwandi
The Bhiwandi police have registered two cases against more than 200 people for alleged unlawful assembly to protest against supporters of BJP functionary Nupur Sharma, who was recently suspended by the party.
On June 12, several people gathered at a spot in Bhiwandi town in Maharashtra, leading to a tense situation.
Some of them had also marched to the houses two persons - Mukesh Baburam Chavan and Saad Ansari- and protested against their posts on social media showing support to Sharma, police said.
Man held over social media post supporting Nupur
Thane Police on Tuesday arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly posting a message on a social media platform in support of a suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.
This came after unidentified hackers gained access to the website of Thane Police in Maharashtra and uploaded a message allegedly regarding religious minorities, the police said on Tuesday.
UN calls for halt to violence in India
The Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a halt to any sort of violence, especially one based on perceived religious differences and hatred, amidst protests in India.
Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General during said, “Our position is … as we've said at the time, is for the full respect of religion, for calling against any sort of hate speech or incitement and, of course, a halt to any sort of violence, especially one based on perceived religious differences and hatred”.
