Man gets life imprisonment for murdering construction worker near Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: A special court in Coimbatore sentenced a 52-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering a construction worker at Kalappanaickenpalayam in 2016. The court imposed a fine of Rs 7,500 on the convict identified as R Subramanian alias Mottaiyan.
Police said construction worker R Manikandan, 18, of Kalappanaickenpalayam and his friend G Murugan alias Daniel, 19, of Somayanur near Thadagam parked their motorcycles near Athanur Amman Temple at Kalappanaickenpalayam around 8 am on March 27, 2016.
Subramanian, a cattle trader at Kalappanaickenpalayam, came there in his goods autorickshaw and asked Manikandan to park his motorcycle somewhere else as he used to park his autorickshaw near the temple. But Manikandan refused to move his motorcycle from there. A quarrel broke out between Manikandan and Subramanian. The locals intervened immediately. Subramanian, Manikandan and Daniel left the place.
Around 4.30pm on the same day, Manikandan and Daniel were chatting with each other near the temple. Subramanian came there in his autorickshaw and attacked Manikandan on his head with a log. Daniel tried to stop Subramanian. But Subramanian assaulted Daniel. Villagers rushed to the spot, and Subrmanian managed to escape from the area.
Manikandan, who suffered injuries, was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Daniel and his friend Rajkumar came to a teashop on a motorcycle. Subramanian noticed the duo and dashed the motorcycle with his goods autorickshaw and managed to escape. Daniel was admitted to a private hospital at Thudiyalur.
Manikandan died in hospital. The Vadvalli police registered a murder case against Subramanian and arrested him. The case trial was held in the special court. Special public prosecutor K Karthikeyan appeared on behalf of the victim.
Judge D Balu pronounced the verdict on Tuesday.
