Assam: 'Bulldozer only an eviction tool', CM

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the BJP governments are not endorsing bulldozers, but using those only as an equipment for evictions.
“Be it UP or Assam, BJP governments are not promoting bulldozers, but using it as an equipment for eviction. When we need to carry out any eviction we have to use bulldozers. Here, we are not promoting bulldozers but the eviction drive. It is the media which has created the hawa around bulldozers,” Sarma said.
Recently in Assam, civil authorities along with police used bulldozers to raze houses of five villagers accused of the vandalising and burning down a Batadrava police station in Nagaon district. The authorities later said these houses were found to have be built on “encroached government lands”.
Sarma defended the state’s tough action against criminals saying these have helped restore law and order in the state. Referring to the protests and clashes elsewhere in the country following the anti-Prophet remarks, Sarma said, “We have taken a tough stand against criminals and now there is not thing called lawlessness here. All sections of people live here and yet nothing disturbing is happening in Assam.”
Sarma said Assam has been using bulldozers to even evict settlers from occupied forestlands.
