Maharashtra daily Covid cases jump 80%; 2 patients test positive for Omicron BA.5

Maharashtra on Tuesday reported as many as 2956 new COVID19 cases, which is about 80% higher than yesterday's tally. The state on Monday reported 1,885 fresh infections. The new cases today pushed the active tally to 18,267. In the same time span, the state also saw 2165 recoveries and 4 deaths, state health department data showed.
Of the new cases recorded today, 2 patients from Thane were found to be Omicron BA.5 positive. Both the patients, found in Thane city, had been vaccinated. They recovered from the latest infection in home isolation, the department added in a press release. One of them was a 25-year-old woman and the other a 32-year-old man. They were found to have contracted coronavirus infection on May 28 and 30, respectively.
According to the B.J. Medical College, Pune, in the Whole Genome Sequencing of recent samples in the state, BA.2 was the most prominent variant followed by BA.2.38, the health department said.
Maharashtra on Monday reported 1,885 fresh COVID-19 cases, a fall of 36 per cent compared to Sunday, and a single fatality, taking the tally of infections to 79,12,462 and the death toll to 1,47,871, the state health department said. On Sunday, the state reported 2,946 cases and two fatalities.
