The metropolis has crossed the 2,000 daily case mark after almost five months.
On January 23, Mumbai had logged 2,550 COVID-19 cases and 13 fatalities.
The financial capital had recorded 1,724 cases and two deaths due to the disease on Tuesday.
The test positivity rate (TPR) —the number of positive cases of coronavirus infection out of the total tests conducted in Mumbai — shot up to 15.58 per cent on Tuesday, the highest since January this year. On Tuesday, Mumbai recorded 1,724 new Covid-19 cases.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the newly renovated ‘Jal Bhushan’ building and visited the historic Shrigundi Temple at Raj Bhavan at Mumbai. Cheif Minister Uddhav Thackery Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and protocol minister Aaditya Thackeray were also present. The prime minister performed Dwar Pujan.
The NCP on Wednesday said that even as the leaders of 17 opposition parties urged party chief Sharad Pawar to be the joint opposition candidate for the presidential election, he once again declined the offer and requested the parties to propose some other names during the meeting to be held next week in Delhi.
The NCP, which is part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra, also thanked the 17 opposition parties for suggesting Pawar's name for the presidential poll.(PTI)
Mumbai on Wednesday reported 2,293 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily count since January 23, and one fresh death linked to the infection, the city civic body said.

Maharashtra transport minister and senior Shiv Sena leader Anil Parab did not appear before the Enforcement Directorate here on Wednesday in connection with a money laundering case, an ED official said.
The central agency had summoned Parab for questioning at its zonal office here in a probe linked to alleged violation of coastal regulation zone provisions in the construction of a resort at coastal Dapoli in Ratnagiri district.
The agency wanted to record Parab's statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), officials had said on Tuesday.
An aide of Parab told PTI that the minister had submitted a reply to the ED summons on Tuesday itself, and therefore he did not appear before it.
The ED had raided premises of Parab and some persons allegedly linked to him in May.
Parab (57), is a three-time Shiv Sena legislator in the Maharashtra Legislative Council and is also the state parliamentary affairs minister.
After the raids on May 26, the ED had questioned Parab and recorded his preliminary statement as part of the case filed after taking cognisance of a recent Union Environment Ministry show-cause notice that termed the Dapoli resort "illegal".(PTI)

Equities ended lower for the fourth straight day on Wednesday, with the Sensex falling 152 points in volatile trade amid mixed global cues and unabated foreign capital outflows.
The BSE benchmark settled 152.18 points or 0.29 per cent lower at 52,541.39. During the day, it dropped 200.21 points or 0.37 per cent to 52,493.36.
The NSE Nifty declined by 39.95 points or 0.25 per cent to 15,692.15.
From the Sensex pack, NTPC, Infosys, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Unilever, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and PowerGrid were the major laggards.
On the other hand, Bajaj Finserv, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel and Larsen & Toubro were among the gainers.(PTI)

The Election Commission of India on Wednesday raised a preliminary objection to a petition filed by Maharashtra Shiv Sena MLA Suhas Kande against the ECI's decision declaring his vote cast in the last week's Rajya Sabha elections as invalid.
The ECI's decision had come after the BJP alleged that he violated the voting process.
Kande, in his petition filed through advocate Ajinkya Udane, said the ECI's decision discharging his vote has caused grave prejudice to his dignity and reputation, and sought that the HC quash and set aside the ECI's decision. ---PTI
Amid rising Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, children across the state returned to schools on Wednesday, with great excitement and a bit of trepidation.
“I have asked my daughter to wear a face mask at all times and use sanitiser whenever possible. The school has assured us that it will take care of precautions but it is important that children also act responsibly,” said Madhuri Gadwe, after dropping her child off at Suvidya School in Borivali. As lakhs of school-going children across Maharashtra begin their classes on Wednesday, the school Education Department will be focused on bringing out-of-school children back into the education system.

NCP leader Supriya Sule on Tuesday said Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar was "denied permission" by the PMO to speak in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a temple inauguration event in Dehu near Pune city, and dubbed it as an insult to the state.
The prime minister inaugurated a shila (rock) temple at the Sant Tukaram Maharaj Mandir dedicated to the 17th-century saint in Dehu. Devendra Fadnavis, the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, spoke just before PM Modi delivered his speech at the programme.

Maharashtra’s Urban Development Department is considering amending Section 33 (9) of Development Control Promotion and Regulations (DCPR), 2034, which will allow the Mumbai municipal commissioner to give approval for redevelopment of buildings that are less than 250 metres in height and are being built under the Cluster Development scheme. Mumbai on Tuesday reported 1,724 fresh Covid-19 cases, a rise of over 600 compared to Monday, and two fatalities due to the infection, the civic bulletin said. With this, Mumbai's tally of infections climbed to 10,83,589 and the Covid-19 death toll to 19,575, it said.
A day earlier, the metropolis had logged 1,118 cases but no fatality. Tuesday is the eighth consecutive day when Mumbai reported Covid-19 cases in four digits.
