
Delhi News Live Updates (June 14): Rahul Gandhi reached the Enforcement Directorate office Tuesday for the second round of questioning by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case. ED questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for over 10 hours Monday. As Rahul Gandhi proceeded to the ED office on Monday, there were dramatic scenes on the streets with leaders trying to accompany him and the police taking them to different police stations. The party claimed the police manhandled several leaders and at least four senior leaders, including former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, sustained injuries.
Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed a petition by CPI(M) leaders Brinda Karat and K M Tiwari against a trial court order seeking registration of an FIR against Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and Minister of I&B Anurag Thakur and MP Parvesh Verma for their alleged hate speech in 2020.
In Covid-related news, taking cognizance of rising Covid cases in Delhi, L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena Monday directed officials to conduct genome sequencing of all positive cases to check for any new variant. The L-G along with Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia reviewed the situation in the city. Delhi reported 614 new cases from 8,700 tests, and a positivity rate of 7.06%, as per Monday’s health bulletin.
A court in Delhi Tuesday reserved its order on AAP minister Satyendar Jain’s bail plea in the money laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate. The court will pronounce the order on June 18.
The ED had arrested Satyendar Jain on May 30 in an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) registered by it on the basis of a case lodged by the CBI in August 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Jain is accused of having laundered money through at least four companies allegedly linked to him. The ED has said that Jain acquired assets from 2015 to 2017, which were “disproportionate to his known sources of income”. He is currently in judicial custody. (Read More)
The Delhi Police on Tuesday stopped Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra from entering the national capital even as a party spokesperson claimed that he was on a personal visit.
The move by the Delhi Police comes at a time when Congress leaders and workers are staging protests at several places, including Delhi, against the Enforcement Directorate notices to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party leader Rahul Gandhi.
Dotasra was en route to Delhi by road for some personal work and was stopped at the border. “The Delhi Police said that there are orders not to allow him to enter the national capital,” the spokesman said. (Read More)
The office of the deputy commissioner of police, north-west district, Delhi issued an order on Monday stating that all kinds of leaves of police officials in its jurisdiction had been stopped with immediate effect, citing “communal scenario and prevailing law and order situation” in Delhi. The order also directed the officers and staff who have gone on leave to join their respective duties.
“In view of the communal scenario and prevailing law and order situation in Delhi, all kind of leaves are hereby stopped with immediate effect. The leaves already granted/sanctioned are also hereby cancelled. The officer/staff who are already running on leave shall join their place of duty at-once, without fail. No officer shall grant/sanction any kind of leave to their subordinate staff without prior approval of DCP north-west district,” the order read.
The order added that all the supervisory officers should ensure compliance, and non-compliance of the order may lead to “stern action” against the staff. (Read More)
A sub-inspector of the Delhi Police was killed and a head constable seriously injured when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck late on Monday night near Uttar Pradesh’s Gajraula, the police said.
The deceased, identified as SI Subhash Chand of West Delhi’s Harinagar police station, was bringing in a man accused of kidnapping when the accident occurred, according to the police.
Deputy commissioner of police (west) Ghanshyam Bansal said, “SI Subhash Chand was returning from the Bareilly direction when a moving truck collided with his vehicle. Head constable Rajender was badly wounded in the accident and is currently in the hospital.” (Read More)
Over 90 districts across 16 states have started lifting fortified rice to distribute under the Public Distribution System (PDS) and a quantity of 2.20 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) has already been distributed in the first two months of the financial year 2022-23—April and May—under the second phase of the implementation of the rice fortification programme, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said Monday.
Addressing a press conference, Food Secretary Sudhanshu Panday said, “In the second phase… Our idea is, as part of the strategy, to cover all districts which are aspirational districts or heavy burden districts in terms of the malnutrition assessment and that number works out to about 291.”(Read More)

Many Congress workers have been detained while protesting against ED summons to Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Anil Chaudhary was detained and manhandled.
Speaking about Congress protests against ED summons to Rahul Gandhi, Senior party leader P Chidambaram said, "We're protesting against misuse of law, if ED follows the law, we've no problem. But ED is not following the law... We're asking what's the scheduled offence? There's no answer. Which police agency has registered an FIR? No answer; no copy of FIR."
He added, "Obviously, they're not following the law & in a democracy, we are entitled to protest... is there any BJP leader against whom the ED has registered a case in the last 4-5 years? Is there any BJP-ruled state where the ED has registered a case?"
Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala, said on Tuesday, "ED probe against Rahul Gandhi is an attempt to muzzle his voice as he has always questioned Modi govt on issues like China capturing our territory, inflation, fuel price hike, unemployment, religious vendetta...He is being constantly attacked."
He added, "We are Gandhi's heirs, we will once again walk, our 'Satyagraha' won't stop"

The Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed a petition by CPI(M) leaders Brinda Karat and K M Tiwari against a trial court order seeking registration of an FIR against Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports and Minister of I&B Anurag Thakur and MP Parvesh Verma for their alleged hate speech in 2020.
Justice Chandra Dhari Singh, who had reserved the verdict in the case on March 25, said that sanction from the government is required for registration of the FIR in the case. The court also said that the petitioners have failed to follow the prescribed mechanism under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The court thus upheld the order passed by the lower court. Many shanties and a scrap godown were gutted after a fire broke out a scrap godown in Bajghera village late on Sunday night. Fire department officials said at least 20 fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire. No casualties have been reported, officials said.
Fire department officials said the cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
Gulshan Kalra, deputy director (technical) fire department, said that a call was received regarding a fire at a scrap godown around 12.40 am, following which fire tenders from all fire stations in Gurgaon were rushed to the spot. Read more
Stating that mass leaders who occupy high offices must conduct themselves with utmost integrity and responsibility, the Delhi High Court on Monday said hate speeches by elected representatives, political and religious leaders warranted “stringent peremptory action” by the central and state governments.
The court made the observations while dismissing a petition challenging a 2020 trial court order that dismissed CPM leaders Brinda Karat and KM Tiwari’s application seeking an FIR against Union minister Anurag Thakur and BJP MP Parvesh Varma for their alleged hate speeches in connection with anti-CAA protests. Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said he has been arrested by Delhi Police while marching towards Enforcement Directorate office in Delhi.
Gehlot added that the Delhi Police took other Congress leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik, Digvijaya Singh, Deependra Hooda, Pawan Khera, P L Poonia, Gaurav Gogoi, and Meenakshi Natarajan to Central Delhi in a bus.
The Rapid Action Force has been deployed close to the ED office after the protestors were all taken away in police buses.
Congress leader Harish Rawat was among those detained by Delhi Police.
