Chennai: Speeding bike kills retired lady cop C Selvakumari

The sports bike that killed the inspector
CHENNAI: A 61-year-old retired police inspector, who was driving her scooter, died after two youths speeding on a bike rammed into her vehicle on the flyover at Outer Ring Road (ORR) near Mannivakkam early on Sunday.
C Selvakumari, the deceased, retired as police inspector in 2008. Her husband Sundaravathanam, 63, is a retired additional DSP with the special branch, CID.
Police said Selvakumari was returning to her house in Koyambedu after staying with her friend overnight at the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation (TNPHC) quarters in Melakottaiyur, when the accident took place.
At 8.30 am, when she was near Manivakkam, two youths, Vishwa and Naveen, both IT employees, hit her from behind. Due to the impact, Selvakumari was thrown away a few metres and suffered injuries to her head and shoulder. She passed away seconds later on the spot.
The two techies had been involved, in the past, in rash and negligent driving, police said, The youths Vishwa, 25 from Mudichur and Naveen, 26, suffered minor injuries and have been admitted to a private hospital in Manapakkam.
Selvakumari had served in the railways attending to unidentified bodies. Before that, she worked in the former chief minister’s core cell for nearly a decade handling security. She returned to Chennai only last month from the US after visiting her daughter, a civil engineer. “I still cannot believe that I have lost my fearless wife due to rash driving by a few youths,” her husband and retired ADSP Sundaravathanam told TOI.
