Water stock in 7 lakes still enough to last Mumbai for almost two months

Civic officials said that they are hopeful that the coming days would have the lakes fill up
MUMBAI: Water stocks in the seven lakes that supply to the city daily currently stands at 1.93 lakh million litres. This is expected to suffice the needs of Mumbaikars for next 51 days. However, for Mumbai to go without a water cut for the coming year, lakes need to have up to 14.47 lakh million litres. This means around 304 days of water stock
The last three days of rain that have been witnessed have mostly seen the two smaller lakes located in Mumbai city area - Tulsi and Vihar - get rains while those located on the outskirts of the city like Bhatsa, Modak Sagar have recorded comparatively less rain. The total rain recorded this season in Tulsi and Vihar has been 117 mm and 125 mm. Lakes like Bhatsa recorded 55 mm of rainfall, Tansa 62 mm, Modak Sagar 28 mm, Upper Vaitarna 12 mm, Middle Vaitarna 15 mm.

Civic officials said that they are hopeful that the coming days would have the lakes fill up. Among the seven lakes in most years that is first to fill up has been Tulsiwhich is located within Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP). However, Tulsi lake just meets 1% of the city's daily water requirement as it is a smaller lake in comparison to the others.
The last three days of rain have given Mumbai over a 100 mm of rainfall. This year, monsoon officially arrived in the city on June 11, a day after the city started recording pre-monsoon showers. Rainfall recorded by the IMD's Colaba and Santacruz observatories has been 100.2mm and 80 mm. In the 24 hours ending Sunday morning, the IMD's Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 37.4 mm and 23 mm of rainfall.
The IMD has forecast a wet week for Mumbai, Thane ahead with light to moderate rain or thundershowers expected to continue.
The weather bureau has also stated that there is a possibility of occasional intense spells.
The rain in the city has brought down the day temperatures marginally. While the maximum temperature which had been hovering around 35 degrees Celsius has now dropped to around 31-33 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperatures have dipped to 25 degrees Celsius, said officials from the weather bureau.
