NEW DELHI: Some parts of the national capital have witnessed
heatwave conditions for
10 consecutive days, with the
maximum temperature in the range of 45-47 degrees Celsius. However,
India Meteorological Department said heatwave conditions will likely abate from
June 14.
According to IMD, Safdarjung, which is the city’s base station, did not record heatwave conditions on Saturday as the maximum temperature settled at 43.8 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal. However, Sports Complex near Akshardham, Mungeshpur, Pitampura and Najafgarh continued to report heatwave conditions. While Sports Complex and Mungeshpur recorded a maximum temperature of 46.7 degrees Celsius, Najafgarh and Pitampura reported 46.3 and 46.1 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The spell of heatwave conditions in some parts of the capital began on June 2. “The heatwave conditions are expected to be over by June 13, but major relief is expected from June 17 when the temperature may come down further due to cloudy sky and pre-monsoon rain,” said RK Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD.
The Met department said the maximum temperature is likely to be around 43 degrees Celsius on Sunday and Monday, but it is likely to start dipping gradually from Tuesday and may touch 42 degrees Celsius. The IMD has predicted very light rain on June 16 and 17, and has placed a ‘yellow’ alert for June 17.
On Saturday, the minimum temperature was 29.7 degrees C, two degrees above normal. The relative humidity oscillated between 41% and 15%. The overall Air Quality Index of the capital was a 256 on Saturday, in the ‘poor’ zone.
