JAIPUR: When 50-year-old
Kalibai battled for her life at the
ICU, doctors working to revive her found her condition deteriorating continuously.
She was brought to the
hospital with severe jaundice, but examinations had found she had encephalopathy, a condition in which functioning of the brain is affected, and coagulopathy, a condition in which the blood's ability to coagulate is impaired.
As her condition worsened and the doctors noticed her survival chances reducing fast, they were shocked to find on further examination that hers was a case of acute liver failure. With the risk of her slipping into coma high, the only hope of her survival was liver transplant.
"Liver transplant was required immediately to save her life. We counselled the family and explained to them the need for a liver transplant.
With all her three sons agreeing to donate a liver, we immediately informed the state government's committee on organ transplant and got the permission around 11 PM.
The transplant was successful, and it was the first successful living donor liver transplant for acute liver failure," said Dr
ML Swarankar, Emeritus chairperson of
Mahatma Gandhi University of
Medical Sciences and Technology (MGUMST).
While liver transplant in chronic liver failure cases has been performed earlier, it is the first case in acute liver transplant, claimed the hospital.
The transplant was performed on May 11. Kalibai, whose husband is a policeman, now has a smile on her face and is thankful to doctors and her son, who donated a portion of his liver.
