Coimbatore: Truck carrying liquor worth Rs 50 lakh overturns, driver sustains injuries

COIMBATORE: A truck laden with 1,100 cases of liquor bottles fell on the service road after it hit the parapet wall of a flyover in Coimbatore district early Sunday morning.
The accident took place around 1.30am on Salem -Kochi national highway at Karumathampatti.
The vehicle was heading towards Tasmac godown at Peelamedu in Coimbatore city.
Officials said at least 50 per cent of liquor bottles were damaged in the accident.
When the vehicle reached a flyover near the TNSTC (Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation) depot at Karumathampatti, driver Chellappan allegedly dozed off and the vehicle hit the parapet wall of the flyover on Salem -Kochi national highway and fell on the service road.
The front and rear axles of the truck were cut on the flyover and the truck overturned on the service road.
Few cases of liquor bottles were damaged. Other motorists informed Karumathampatti police about the accident.
The driver suffered injuries on his right leg and he was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Police personnel were deployed around the truck to prevent the theft of liquor bottles and vehicle movements were stopped on the service road.
Tasmac officials visited the place and shifted the unbroken liquor bottles to other trucks. They told police that around Rs 50 lakh worth liquor bottles were loaded in the truck. At least Rs 25 lakhs worth liquor bottles were damaged in the mishap. The police cleared the truck from the road around 4pm on Sunday and later, other vehicles were allowed to use the service road.
On April 24, a similar accident was reported at the same place. A truck laden with paint and thinner, was completely gutted after the axle of the truck broke and the truck lost control and fell on the service road from at least 15-foot-height flyover on Salem-Kochi national highway at Karumathampatti in Coimbatore district.
The truck driver and cleaner sustained minor injuries in the accident.
