'Over 50,000 TB patients have recovered in tea gardens of Assam in last four years'

GUWAHATI: Neighbours suspected that the body was packed in a bag and was carried by Jagannath himself during dusk. "Jagannath lost hope that his son could recover fully. His son could not walk properly and due to prolonged confinement at home, he was mentally disturbed. The garden workers thought he would die but not at the hands of his father like this," a neighbour of Jagannath told the media.
Health department officials said the murder has once again brought to light the vulnerability of the tea garden workers to TB as they frequently come in close contact during plucking of leaves. "Over 50,000 TB patients have recovered in tea gardens of Assam in the last four years. But the Sonari incident is shocking. Stigma is becoming lesser in tea gardens of late due to good recovery," said a health department official.
