Workers trapped in land cave-in rescued after 2 hrs

Thiruvananthapuram: Two guest labourers had a miraculous escape after they were trapped under debris in a land cave-in at a flat construction site at Panavila on Saturday morning.
As many as 20 fire and rescue service personnel worked for two hours to pull out Deepak (24) and Rahul (23), both natives of Assam, from the rubble. Deepak sustained minor injuries while Rahul suffered a hand fracture after a large concrete piece fell on him.

Close to an under-construction seven-storey building, the workers had dug up a 45ft pit for the construction of another structure. Later, they built a concrete wall to avoid landfall. When the land caved in, the concrete wall broke and the workers who were staying in a tent above fell down along with the rubble.
Hearing the noise, other workers and locals rushed to the spot and rescued Deepak in minutes, who was seen just beneath the surface, but Rahul was covered till his waist with debris.
Fire and rescue officials reached the spot immediately and started removing debris with bare hands. “Using heavy machinery or other equipment for removing debris would have caused another landfall as the earth was so fragile on the spot. Due to this, we were removing debris with our hands gently and it took two hours to rescue him finally,” said a fire and rescue official.
Rahul was admitted to the medical college hospital. There are around 70 migrant labourers working at the site. Police have not registered any case yet.
