Ranchi: The government on Saturday initiated measures to prevent a further escalation of tension in the state over the recent controversial remarks made against
Prophet Muhammad by BJP’s suspended spokesperson,
Nupur Sharma.
Authorities suspended internet services in the state capital where two persons died and several persons, including police and media personnel, were injured when violence broke out during protest rallies on Friday. Additional police personnel were deployed in the city as well as many districts described as “sensitive zones”.
Ranchi DC Chavi Ranjan said the internet services would be suspended here till further orders. Earlier on Friday, the authorities had suspended internet services till 6am on Saturday.
IG (operations) Amol Homkar said 2,600 police personnel and two companies of the Rapid Action Force would help senior officers maintain law and order in Ranchi. He added, “A special cell under ADG (operations)
Sanjay Lathekar has been formed to monitor the situation.”
Homkar said police reinforcements had been sent to at least 15 districts.
Security personnel staged flag marches in many localities in the state capital and kept a close vigil on the situation with the help of CCTVs and drones. “We are keeping vigil round the clock,” Ranchi range DIG Anis Gupta said.
“We have promulgated Section 144 of the CrPC in many city areas such as Pandra, Argora, Lalpur, Chutia,
Lower Bazaar, Jagannathpur, Bariyatu, Sukhdeonagar, Daily Market, Hindpidhi, Kotwali and Doranda. Last evening, prohibitory orders were promulgated on a stretch of the Main Road,” Gupta added.
