Gujarat: Rare surgery gives Bihar girl a shot at normal life

The girl, who was recommended to the hospital by Bollywood star Sonu Sood Foundation for the rare surgery, is healthy and recovering fast, said doctors.
SURAT: A two-year-old girl from Bihar suffering from Epigastric Heteropagus Twinning got another fresh start at life after doctors at Kiran Hospital performed a six-hour long surgery to remove four body parts attached to her body.
“Only 40 such surgeries have been performed in the world till now,” said Mathur Savani, chairman of Kiran Hospital.
The girl, who was recommended to the hospital by Bollywood star Sonu Sood Foundation for the rare surgery, is healthy and recovering fast, said doctors. “It was actually a twin that was attached to the body of the girl but it did not have head and heart. Hence it was dependent upon the body of the girl,” said one of the doctors.
Due to the additional body parts, the girl’s body the minor could not walk properly. She had to take a rest after walking a few steps. Doctors claimed that the condition can prove fatal for a child if not treated early.
The surgery was conducted by Dr Mithun K N, paediatric surgeon along with team of doctors, Dr Dharmesh Dhanani, gastro surgeon, Dr Pavan Mandviya, paediatrician, Dr Bhavin Lashkari, Dr Darshan Trivedi, Dr Uday Surana and Dr Mehul Panchal.
“Sonu Sood Foundation had searched for hospitals but it being a challenging surgery no hospital came forward. Our team of doctors showed readiness after examining the case and we did not charge any money for it. It being a rare surgery it can cost lakhs,” Savani added.
