"I became friends with LaConco because she accepted me as I am and for who I am."
This is how Mabusi Seme, a friend of the Real Housewives of Durban reality show, said her friendship with Nonkanyiso 'Laconco' Conco blossomed. Seme, a businesswoman, opened up about this in an interview with Lungelo KM on his YouTube Channel.
She was initially introduced to the show as a friend of another cast member, Nonku Williams, in the show's first season. However, their relationship quickly went south when Williams denied knowing her.
"I've always been open to a friendship with Nonku. It's unfortunate it turned out the way it did," she said in the interview.
Despite her rocky introduction to the show, Seme acknowledged that she and Williams were in a better space. "I don't think my friendship with Nonku has grown much, but I feel that it's much better than what it was in the first season because I'm not her friend anymore, and I'm not trying to be her friend."
"Only now is she trying to [get to] know me better, and she's appreciating me as a person," she said.
While her relationship with Williams was somewhat better than when they were introduced to each other on-screen in season one, Seme said her friendship with Conco is still going strong. "Her (Conco) and I have such a lovely relationship, such a lovely understanding."
"I accept her as much as she accepted me."
The friendship between Seme and Conco grew significantly between seasons one and two of the show, with Seme often coming to Conco's defence when she was criticised for not letting any of the other cast members in on her private life. In an interview, Conco attributed her private life to linkage to former president Jacob Zuma and wanting a lead a life her son would not find questionable when he was older.
Conco is Zuma's ex-fiance, and they share a child.
"Relationships don't make you, don't define you, so I don't know why it matters or has to do with anything. It's her life, and she opens up when she's comfortable," Seme said.
