Coronavirus Cases in India Live updates (12 June 2022): India reported 8,084 new Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths, according to data released by the Union Health Ministry. As of Monday, the active cases stood at 47,995. With The death tally reaching up to 5,24,771 in the country, the number of people discharged from hospitals totalled up to 4,26,57,335.

With 1,745 new Covid-19 cases recorded on Saturday, the count of active patients rose to over 10,000 in Mumbai. The state, meanwhile, recorded 2,922 cases and one death. A day after recording nearly 2,000 new cases, the daily caseload in Mumbai declined slightly on Saturday. The test positivity rate (TPR) — the number of positive cases out of the total tests conducted — increased to 12.26 per cent within the last 24 hours.

In a separate development, China’s capital Beijing is facing an “explosive” Covid-19 outbreak connected to a bar, a government spokesman warned on Saturday, as the commercial hub of Shanghai began mass testing to contain a jump in cases tied to a popular beauty salon.

China stocks fall on Covid concerns, US inflation

China stocks fell on Monday, as Shanghai and Beijing conducted new rounds of COVID-19 mass testing, sparking worries of fresh outbreaks and lockdowns, while highflying US inflation raised concerns that the Federal Reserve may tighten policy for too long and cause a sharp slowdown.

The Hang Seng index dropped 2.8% to 21,193.95 points. The Hong Kong China Enterprises Index fell 2.9% to 7,392.79.

Pfizer Covid vaccines safe and effective for small children, FDA staff say

US Food and Drug Administration staff reviewers on Sunday said Pfizer-BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccines were effective and safe for use in children aged 6 months to 4 years.

The FDA reviewers said in briefing documents published on Sunday evening that their evaluation did not reveal any new safety concerns related to the use of the vaccine in young children.

The FDA analysis of data from Pfizer's trial was published ahead of a June 15 meeting of its outside advisers.

Recommendations from the external advisers will determine the FDA's decision on the vaccines.

"Available data support the effectiveness of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 Vaccine 3-dose primary series in preventing Covid-19 in the age group of 6 months through 4 years," FDA staff said in the review.

An early analysis of data from Pfizer-BioNTech's vaccine based on 10 symptomatic Covid-19 cases identified when the Omicron coronavirus variant was dominant suggested a vaccine efficacy of 80.3% in the under-5 age group. (Reuters)

Over 400 SC verdicts translated, until Covid-19 stalled AI project

Over 450 verdicts of the Supreme Court have been translated into 12 regional languages using an artificial intelligence software, with Hindi topping the list of translations followed by Tamil.

While 469 verdicts have been translated since the launch of the ambitious project in August 2018, it came to a halt during the pandemic and is yet to be revived.

“The focus on vernacular languages is more than ever but like many other functions of the Court, Covid impacted the priority given to the project,” a Supreme Court official said on the condition of anonymity. (Read More)

From security to uncertainty: Post Covid, many elderly return to workforce

This, too, is a Covid effect. Pushed out of their comfort zones by a pandemic that took away their financial security, many people in the twilight of their lives or recently retired are returning to the workforce – be it taking tuitions, applying for office assistant posts or setting up a hawker cart.

The reasons for seeking financial independence are varied as is the income bracket. It could be somebody whose son lost his job, another whose savings dwindled in the long months of lockdown or an elderly person who may have seen an earning child die of Covid and is forced to again support the family.

“Many elderly no longer have the concept of tomorrow and this is creating many uncertainties in the minds of people,” said Himanshu Rath, founder and chairperson of Agewell Foundation. (Read More)

Covid-19 surge not harbinger of 'new wave' but 'expected fluctuation' during endemic prevalence: Experts

The current rise in COVID-19 cases is not a harbinger of a "new wave" but an "expected fluctuation" during endemic prevalence, experts have said, emphasising that lack of mask-wearing and low intake of booster shots may be reasons behind the surge.

They also said the recent surge is due to increased travel, social gathering and economic activities resulting in a greater possibility of the transmission of the virus.

Seventeen districts in India, including seven from Kerala and five from Mizoram, are reporting a weekly COVID-19 positivity rate of more than 10 percent. In 24 districts, including seven from Kerala and four each from Maharashtra and Mizoram, the weekly positivity is between 5 to 10 per cent, an official source said.

Noted virologist T Jacob John said the present increase in cases is not like a surge but a gradual increase that is not steady or uniformly distributed. --PTI

Taiwan Health Minister Chen Shih-chung has contracted Covid-19, and is feeling fine and isolating at home, the government said on Sunday. Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Centre, which Chen is also the head of, said that on Sunday morning he began feeling symptoms and carried out a home test, which was positive. Chen has been the public face of the fight against Covid-19, appearing almost daily at news conferences. (PTI)

No need to panic over rising no. of Covid cases, no new variant of concern has been found: Experts

The increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country over the last few days should not be a cause for panic, health experts said on Saturday, highlighting that no new variant of concern has been found and the rise so far is limited to a few districts. They also pointed out towards non-adherence of Covid-appropriate behaviour and people being unenthusiastic about getting the booster dose, which possibly has increased the pool of population susceptible to the infection.

Seventeen districts in the country, including seven in Kerala and five in Mizoram, are reporting a weekly Covid positivity rate of more than 10 per cent, while in 24 districts, including seven in Kerala and four each in Maharashtra and Mizoram, the weekly positivity rate is between five and 10 per cent, an official source said.

"First of all, we have not found any new variant of concern. India now has BA.4 and BA.5, in addition to BA.2, which have a slightly higher transmissibility as compared to the other Omicron sub-lineages," Dr N K Arora, chairman of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI), told PTI. (PTI)

Taiwan to cut Covid-related quarantine for arrivals to 3 days

Taiwan said on Saturday it would cut mandatory quarantine for all arrivals to three days from seven, its latest relaxation of the rules to try to live with Covid-19 and resume normal life even as it has been dealing with a surge of infections. Taiwan has kept its quarantine rules in place as large parts of the rest of Asia have relaxed or lifted them completely, though in May it cut the number of days spent in isolation for arrivals to seven from 10 previously.

Taiwan has reported more than 2.7 million domestic cases since the beginning of the year, driven by the more infectious Omicron variant. But with more than 99% of those exhibiting no or mild symptoms, the government has relaxed rather than tightened restrictions in what it calls the "new Taiwan model". Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Centre said the new, reduced quarantine rule would start from Wednesday.

After leaving quarantine, people will have to continue to monitor their health for a further four days and avoid going out if possible, it added. (Reuters)

Beijing warns of ‘explosive’ Covid outbreak as Shanghai begins mass testing

China’s capital Beijing is facing an “explosive” COVID-19 outbreak connected to a bar, a government spokesman warned on Saturday, as the commercial hub of Shanghai began mass testing to contain a jump in cases tied to a popular beauty salon.

The warning followed a renewed tightening of COVID curbs in Beijing since Thursday, with at least two districts – including its most populous, Chaoyang – closing certain entertainment venues after a flare-up in a busy neighbourhood known for its nightlife, shopping and streets of embassies. Welcome to today's blog

Hello and welcome to today's live blog. Stay tuned for all the updates related to Covid-19!

The BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron sub-variants are making their presence felt across various areas in the country with the daily Covid tally now showing a rise in the country. When contacted, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, WHO chief scientist, told The Indian Express that it could be the start of a mini wave.

“The sub-variants that are emerging are more transmissible than the original Omicron BA.1 and there is a likelihood of waning immunity. It is a possibility that there could be mini waves every four-six months or so and hence, apart from all Covid-appropriate precautionary measures that need to be taken, it is important to also track the variant,” Dr Swaminathan said.

Dr G C Khilnani, chairman of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine at Delhi’s PSRI Hospital, says the latest Covid-19 spiral is being caused by more infectious sub-variants. But hybrid immunity and precaution vaccines can neutralise the severity of the disease even as you get repeat infections, he tells Anonna Dutt.
