RAJKOT: They brought the dead alive, took out their life insurance and again killed them; all using forged documents to siphon off the claim amount.
The
Khambhaliya police of
Devbhumi Dwarka district have busted a racket and arrested four persons who had prepared forged documents in connivance with executives of a leading
private insurance company.
Police have found three cases where life insurance was taken out in the name of a dead man and his life insurance amount was claimed after a few years.
The arrested include the branch manager and agents of the insurance company.
Police started an investigation after receiving an application from Vasudev Pudlik, a senior executive of the company, after he got suspicious about insurance being taken in the name of a dead man.
It was alleged that the insurance was taken in the name of Nathu Odedara, a resident of Shetha Bhadthar village of Khambhalia taluka, who was already dead when the policy was issued. Later, the
insurance money was claimed. During investigation, police found that Odedra had died in 2011. His son, in the connivance of company’s branch manager Umesh Sanchaniya and agent Arjan Ambaliya, took the insurance in 2015 and again declared his father dead by submitting a forged death certificate to claim a sum of Rs 3.82 lakh.
Digging deeper, the police found two more similar cases. One such case is that of a woman named Mali Bhochiya of Dhaturiya village of Kalyanpur taluka. Her husband Mashri took the insurance on her name with the similar modus operandi in 2016 and claimed a sum of nearly Rs five lakh in 2018. In another case, an amount of Rs 1.74 lakh was claimed in the name of late Ravi Bodar.
Those arrested were Sanchaniya, agent Ambaliya, son of Odedara and husband of Bhochiya.
Police said they suspect this to be a bigger scam and are thoroughly investigating the case.
