88.44 per cent students pass West Bengal higher secondary examination
An estimated 88.44 per cent of 7,20,862 candidates passed the West Bengal higher secondary examinations (class 12) the results of which were declared on Friday.West Bengal council of higher secondary education president Chiranjib Bhattacharya told a press meet that the pass percentage of boys was 90.19 per cent while that of girls was 86.19 per cent. Muslim women fight odds, break stereotypes, win hearts & awards
Seventeen Muslim women from different age groups and diverse fields, like media, education, medicine and the culinary arts, were feted on Thursday for breaking the stereotype and breaking the glass ceiling. Each is an achievers in her own right.Uzma Firoz, a costume jeweller, had a tough time breaking the mould. “My family was sceptical about how far it could go. When I started eight years ago, there was no Instagram, or other platform where we could connect with clients and display our work. There is also some stigma of working in a creative field by older members of our community. Many older relatives initially reacted negatively to me,” she said.Firoz started with a small exhibition and, over time, got more clients. Until recently, before her Instagram was hacked, she had over 55,000 followers. “The appreciation I received made me feel proudof myself for doing something different,” she said.

Salt Lake set to get organic waste convertors
With the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation planning to set up organic waste convertors (OWC) across Salt Lake and Rajarhat, officials from BMC solid waste manageme nt department visited two Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC)-run OWC units at Chetla to check how they functionsThe BMC officials said they had a first-hand knowledge on the functioning of an OWC that converts kitchen or wet waste into manure. So far, the KMC has been the only civic body in the state to have installed two such OWCs, officials s aid. The BMC is preparing estimates to set up at least seven organic waste converters (OWC) in different wards of Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur areas.

BJP national president J P Nadda on Thursday warned state unit leaders against speaking openly on demands for carving up Bengal. West Bengal logs 95 more Covid-19 cases, tally mounts to 20,19,927
West Bengal on Thursday reported 95 fresh Covid-19 cases, 10 more than the previous day, raising the tally to 20,19,927, the health department said.The death toll, however, remained at 21,205, it said.The state now has 517 active cases, while 19,98,205 people have recovered from the disease thus far, including 47 in the last 24 hours. West Bengal: Green autos on meters may be cheaper alternative to taxis
The state government is planning to allow electric autos to operate as contract carriage with physical or app-based meters like taxis, only a lot cheaper for personalised trips from the doorstep to the destination. Apart from being friendly on the pocket, it will also be good for the environment.The transport department has already received 15,000 applications after the publication of the notification.The e-autos, unlike the LPG autos which operate across the length and breadth of the city on fixed routes, will not require any permit. The e-autos only need to get registered with the respective registration authority to ply.

Double-murder mastermind identified, 3 accomplices held
The Kolkata Police on Thursday claimed to have cracked the Bhowanipore double-murder case with the arrest of three persons. Police teams have also left for other states to nab three others who are on the run, including the main accused and conspirator, a cousin of one of the sons-in-laws of the murdered couple. The motive, police said, was a dispute over repayment of loan.The investigation has so far revealed that at least six people were present at the address when the murder took place on Monday afternoon. The couple — Ashok Shah (56) and Rashmita Shah (52) — were killed between 1pm and 2pm.
