VADODARA: Organs of a 30-year-old woman from Vadodara who was declared brain-dead will give new life to four patients in Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
Komal Patel, an electrical engineer working with an MNC, developed sudden convulsion after she recently visited Kedarnath where she had gone on a pilgrimage with her mother.
First, she was shifted to a nearby hospital for primary treatment from where she was referred to Parul Sevashram Hospital (
PSH) for tertiary care on Sunday night.
At PSH, she was diagnosed to be suffering from cerebral sinus. As her condition deteriorated rapidly, she was put on ventilator support but was later declared brain-dead. “We decided to donate the organs so that it can give life to many other people,” said her brother Vishal Patel, a government employee, while talking to media persons on Tuesday.
“All the necessary formalities were completed. A team of doctors from Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad and Global Hospital, Mumbai completed the organ retrieval process within 24 hours of the declaration. A green corridor has been created to expedite the transportation of the organs,” said PSH’s medical director Dr
Komal Patel, adding that PSH is a SOTTO approved organ transplant centre.
With the family’s consent, the deceased’s heart, liver, two kidneys, eyes and hairs have been donated. “While her heart will be transplanted into a patient in Mumbai, her liver and two kidneys will be transplanted into three patients in Ahmedabad. Also, her eyes will provide vision to a visually impaired patient,” said Dr Misbah Rangwala, chief intensivist at PSH. The family has gone the extra mile by donating hair for cancer patients. “We shall soon be performing live donor kidney transplant surgeries,” said Dr Krupa Vaghela, PSH’s medical administrator.
