The Delhi Police on Tuesday provided security to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her family after she claimed that she received death threats over her remarks on the Prophet. She had requested the police to provide security, citing 'harassment' and 'threats'.

"Sharma and her family were provided police security after she alleged that she received threats and was harassed over her remarks," an official said.

The BJP had on Sunday suspended Sharma and expelled its Delhi unit media head Naveen Kumar Jindal after their remarks against the Prophet led to a diplomatic row.

Sharma's comments, made during a TV debate on May 27, and Jindal's now-deleted tweets, sparked a Twitter trend calling for boycott of Indian products in some countries in west Asia. Sharma, thereafter, retracted her statement but claimed that her comments followed 'continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev'. Amid sharp reaction from countries like Kuwait, Qatar and Iran, the BJP issued a statement asserting that it respected all religions and denounced insults of any religious personality.
