Hijab row: Notices issued to Uppinangady students

Mangaluru: More than 20 girls of the Government First Grade College in Uppinangady were issued notices after they tried to protest for not being allowed to wear the hijab, Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor said on Monday.
He said that students had gathered in the ladies’ room and were not attending class.
The staff tried to convince them that the ladies’ room was meant only for changing clothes, not for sitting during class hours.
A few of the girls then protested, demanding permission to wear the hijab in the classroom. Notices were issued to the students, he said, adding that out of 95 students, 13 attended classes without the hijab.
The joint director of collegiate education visited the campus also.
A section of students submitted a memorandum and the officer reportedly held a meeting with the college principal.
