Fire reported near air traffic control tower at airport

Ahmedabad: A fire incident was reported near ATC (air traffic control) tower of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport of the city on Monday evening. No loss of life or property was reported in the incident.
“With prompt action by the airport’s fire safety department, a minor fire was contained immediately. Staff at SVPIA diligently administered & assessed the entire process. No damage or injury has been recorded to any property or person. Operations continued smoothly with no disruption to passengers,” mentioned a statement issued by the airport after the incident.
According to the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES), it received a call at 6.09pm on Monday from a person named V N Parmar informing the agency that a fire has broken out in the garbage piles and dry grass near the ATC tower.
“We sent around 10 firemen in two vehicles — a fire tender and a water tanker — to the airport. By the time we reached there, the airport staff had almost doused the fire using extinguisher,” said an AFES officer.
The fire officer said that the exact cause of fire could not be known. “But the fire might have taken place as someone might have thrown a lit matchstick or cigarette there as there were no electric wires at the spot,” said an AFES officer.
He said that the fire was doused in around 15 to 20 minutes.
Sources at the airport said that there were scrap furniture near the garbage dump which caught the fire.
