National Institute of Technology Karnataka’s self-financed PG courses have good demand

MANGALURU: NITK Surathkal’s full-time self-financed postgraduate programmes like MTech, MSc, MCA and MBA, to accommodate more candidates, has received a positive response. The scheme started in the academic year 2021-22.
NITK officials said that as per norms and depending upon courses, five to 10 additional candidates can be admitted to the existing PG courses. With demand soaring, some courses have received three times or more applications.
Vidya Shetty K, dean, (academics) told TOI that the institute started admitting self-financed candidates for all its 36 PG programmes, from the last academic year. The candidates who fulfil the prescribed minimum eligibility criteria can apply. The student who is selected under the full-time self-financed category, will not receive any scholarship or assistantship.
“Though it was the first time, we did receive a good response. We had not publicised much, but managed to receive a lot of applications. A total of 386 applications for 154 seats were received. Among them, only 104 candidates were selected for 36 courses,” said Shetty.
She added that the number of applications is likely to go up this academic year. “We have been receiving a lot of queries from candidates on when the process commences. With this, we assume that there will be more competition for the seats,” said Shetty.
In the last academic year, some courses such as VLSI design, MBA, computer science and engineering, structural engineering, mechanical design, computer science and engineering-information security, received applications, that were more than four times the number of seats.
Some programmes have less or no applications. They include, geoinformatics, marine structures, nanotechnology and chemical engineering. Courses like industrial biotechnology and process metallurgy received zero applications.
Admission process is on
Shetty added that tuition and other fees for the self-financed postgraduate programmes is slightly higher, compared to regular candidates. This year’s admission process is on. The information required for the applicants of self-financed PG programmes is available on : www.nitk.ac.in.
